Why was the University of South Carolina challenging the USC logo that University of Southern California wears?

As far as I am concerned University of Southern California is the real USC. We are the best school in the best state in the union. We always dominate in academic and athletics. Whereas University of South Carolina is a 3rd tier school in a backwards red-neck state.
